Nowadays, this unique weaving technique is also used in all kinds of other ways, such as on textiles, curtains and rugs. Read on and discover why you won't soon forget a chenille rug.

To begin with, the name of this weaving technique is derived from the French word for caterpillar. When you look at the yarn, you understand that this name is not so strange after all. The yarn has many similarities with the small insects. Long and a little 'hairy'. This may remind you of the silkworm that spins the luxurious material silk. Like silk, chenille was also considered a precious and luxurious material in the past and was used for scarves and cloaks, for example. This beautiful shiny rug is as soft and luxurious as an expensive scarf!

Rug size depends on the room and layout. As a rule of thumb, leave roughly 15–20cm of floor visible around the rug's edges, and in seating areas make sure the front legs of your sofa and chairs rest on the rug.

In 2026, expect to see natural fibres like jute and wool, warm earthy tones, abstract and hand-drawn patterns, and textured high-low pile finishes taking centre stage.

For the best look, the rug should extend at least 15–20cm beyond each side of the sofa, with the front legs of the sofa (and ideally any accompanying chairs) resting on top of the rug.

In a living room, aim for a rug that comfortably fits under all the main seating with a small margin of floor showing. In a bedroom, choose a rug that extends at least 45–60cm beyond the sides of the bed.
