Because an outdoor rug is exposed to different weather conditions, it can collect quite a bit of dirt over time. We therefore recommend regularly beating or sweeping your outdoor rug to remove loose dirt such as leaves or crumbs. This prevents dirt from settling deeper into the outdoor rug.

How do you remove green algae from an outdoor rug?

With warm water, mild soap and a soft brush, you can quickly and safely remove green algae. Scrub well, rinse thoroughly and let it dry in the sun – it works wonders. Avoid aggressive cleaning products such as bleach, as these can damage the rug. With the right approach, your outdoor rug is clean and fresh in no time.

Cleaning an outdoor rug of stains

Remove a local stain best with a cotton cloth and some water. First remove dried dirt, then tackle the stain. Always do this with care and with a blotting motion, never rub. This way you only push the stain deeper into the outdoor rug or unintentionally spread the stain further. Does the stain remain visible? Then consider the following treatments:

• Salt

Salt has the ability to absorb dirt. Sprinkle some salt over the stain and let it soak in for at least half an hour. Then blot the salt away with a damp cloth and rinse with water.

• Baking soda

Baking soda is a great remedy for removing stains and bad odours. Sprinkle a generous amount of baking soda over the area to be treated. Then pour lukewarm water or a diluted mixture of vinegar and water over it. This may foam. Let it soak for a while and then rinse with water. Always let the outdoor rug dry afterwards.

• Vinegar

Mix one part vinegar with roughly an equal amount of water. Pour this mixture over the stain to be treated and let it soak. Rinse with water and let the outdoor rug dry well.

• Rug cleaner

Use special rug cleaner for stubborn stains that don't come out easily. Read the instructions carefully before you get started. Avoid cleaning products containing bleach to protect the colours in your outdoor rug.

*Repeat the treatments several times if the stain doesn't come out immediately.

Refreshing an outdoor rug

Is your outdoor rug due for a thorough refresh? Make a solution of mild soap or washing-up liquid and lukewarm water and pour it over the outdoor rug. Use a soft brush and scrub the outdoor rug clean with circular movements. Don't scrub too hard so you don't damage the fibres. Not usually. Only if the outdoor rug is small and washable according to the label. Most are too large or too stiff and get damaged in the washing machine. Best to clean with lukewarm water, mild soap and a soft brush or garden hose. That's safe and keeps your outdoor rug strong, fresh and vibrant in colour!

How quickly does an outdoor rug dry?

A plastic outdoor rug dries on average within 2 to 4 hours. Materials like polypropylene don't absorb moisture, so water drains right off. Especially with sun and a bit of wind. The rug dries fastest on a permeable surface.

Extra tip: hang the rug up after a rainstorm or flip one side over so it dries faster.

Storing an outdoor rug

Although an outdoor rug is made of materials that can withstand various weather conditions, it's wise to store it after the outdoor season.
