However, it's important that you do this in a thoughtful way, because you don't want it to look like a mini tornado has blown through your room and accidentally laid the carpets on top of each other. Under the motto of 'the more rugs, the more joy!' we examined the art of combining rugs for you and came up with the following options that are easy to apply.

First of all; what exactly is rug layering? Actually, it means that you combine two or more rugs in a surprising way. This coupling is characterised by placing a section of one rug, under the other rug. This way you create a unit regardless of how different the carpets are.

And in those 'differences' lies the art! Because what exactly are your mix & match options?

Option 1:

We start with rug layering for beginners. To warm up, the option of combining rugs of the same material and/or with the same print, but all in a different colour. With your eyes closed you feel no difference in the surface, but when you open your eyes the colour mix comes in. You can go as far as you like, for example yellow/orange/blue or combine a calm shade with a bright pop colour. Also combining two identical rugs in terms of print and material in different colours gives a surprising effect!

Stack away: two vintage rugs, in different colours are perfect for this option.

Option 2:

Logically, you can also flip it and go a step further. Combining rugs in the same colour but from different materials is a form of rug layering that can be applied in a subtle way. Mix a jute rug with an earthy low-pile specimen. Or make a wool rug look even softer by laying a beige cotton carpet underneath. This option is easy to apply in many interiors because the focus is on the material.

Stack away: for the best effect, lay a rug with a rich material on top of a carpet that is more neutral in nature. This way the top rug will come into its own even more.

Option 3:

This option is for the real daredevil! This form of layering is about mixing different shapes. Sometimes it's already a big step to move away from a rectangular rug, with this trend you'll really make a statement! In any case, round rugs lend themselves exceptionally well to rug layering. There is namely even more attention to your carefully chosen vintage, chenille or patchwork rug when you place the rug on a round base.

Option 4:

The ultimate layering for the real pro! Here 'opposites attract' applies. Do you like seeing a love affair between two complete opposites when it comes to rugs? Then go for it and dare to be creative!

The most surprising combinations greatly enhance the layering effect. So a patchwork rug becomes even more elegant on a rough sisal base. A wool rug becomes even softer on a vintage rug and a chenille rug shines even more when you place the rug on a round, jute rug.

Where can you apply rug layering? This trend comes into its own best when a room is large enough. It should certainly NOT look like the rugs were forced to be placed on top of each other. Also ensure plenty of space between the rugs and the wall. A strip of at least 30 centimetres is certainly desired with multiple rugs. Furthermore, it's important that you give the rug layering the attention it deserves when keeping the rest of the decor quiet.

Extra tip: low-pile rugs lend themselves best to this trend otherwise the risk of tripping becomes simply too high!
